As a person living in the city, you can’t help but notice that cockroaches are everywhere! If you aren’t careful, they’ll come into your apartment and quickly overrun it.
They breed so rapidly that within just a few months there could be hundreds of them living inside your walls, making it close to impossible to eradicate all of them. So how do you prevent them from taking over? Check out these 5 tips for keeping those buggers away for good!
- Cockroaches will eat anything. If you aren’t uprooting any food or dropping crumbs, don’t expect to see cockroaches in your apartment. These pesky insects are scavengers by nature and need the protein found in food to survive. Keep counters clean and free of spills, wipe up messes immediately, store all food, especially pet food, in tightly sealed containers and wash dishes right after eating for best results when it comes to keeping roaches out of your home.
- Cockroaches can be easily startled but they also have an extremely short memory so repeating this tactic is key to ridding your apartment of the little guys over time. Spray along baseboards in rooms where they’re most likely to be, particularly in the early morning while they’re still sluggish. Cockroaches are more active at night but if you flush them out during the day they’ll be less likely to head back into your home for fear of being sprayed again.
- Keep all food products in sealed containers to exclude cockroaches from entering your home via this route. Make sure you store enough food in each container so that it does not go bad or attract other pests like ants or termites who love starchy foods like flour and sugar! The smellier the better chances are you will keep them away.
- If there is just one place for these guys to come in, make sure it’s through a crack underneath the door rather than through an open window. That way you can seal it off quickly with careful application of caulk, leaving no other place for them to enter your home.
- A cockroach will travel up to 3 miles looking for food so if you have more than one apartment in the building then your neighbours are likely already experiencing an infestation too.
